Sunday Smiles

I've decided to start a little something new around here, and instead of using Sundays as a chance to talk about myself, I'm going to use Sundays as a chance to share a little bit of good news. Just a few stories that put a smile on my face that will hopefully do the same for you!

I saw this story floating around Facebook and immediately felt compelled to share it, in a way it is the inspiration for this post. It's about a senior care facility in Amsterdam, designed specially for people living with Dementia. Nicknamed, 'Dementia Village' the centre is a closed community with shops, clubs and trained "villagers" ready to intervene and provide care when necessary. Residents are able to move freely between secured buildings, without putting themselves at risk and best of all it provides freedom to individuals who may otherwise have given up their independence entirely. The environment has allowed some of the residents to even have their daily medications reduced!
Read all about it here and here.

Another good news story I heard this weekend was about the amazing kids involved with the Hope Blooms Community Garden in Halifax. A fundraiser they were involved with over the weekend, the Molson Coors Give'r, raised $1431. They are going to use the money to build a new tool shed to help with their gardening. This follows a successful trip to Dragon's Den where they wowed the Dragons. These kids are running a successful salad dressing company and most of them aren't even in high school yet. I cannot sing their praises enough!

Facebook also introduced me to Waverley Mansion, a seniors residence that has been posting dance videos on YouTube over the past couple of years. I think these are awesome, Call Me Maybe is my favourite, but they've done a bunch of songs (even Gangnam Style and The Harlem Shake). Regardless of the song their smiles make these videos worth watching!

My last little bit of happiness for today comes courtesy of Coca-Cola's Superbowl commercial. When the video reached 10,000 shares Coca-Cola donated $50,000 to the Boys and Girls Club of America. Sure, it's a huge corporation that won't miss $50,000 but still it's nice to see some of the Superbowl ad hype actually going towards a worthy cause. Plus, it's the type of feel-good commercial Coca-Cola is known for.

Have you heard of any good news lately?  Feel free to share any stories, thoughts or ideas for these weekly posts in the comments.

Keep Smiling :)
