The Little Things

Sometimes I feel so much pressure to do something BIG with my life, or for others. To come in with this grand gesture and change the world. As you can imagine it quickly becomes a lot of pressure, trying to decide how to best change the world over night and it's very hard to follow through on.

I've recently come to realize it's really not about the big gestures but about the little moments. It's not that big gestures don't have their place, or that they aren't awesome (they obviously are) but they often require more resources, ability, planning, etc than most people have on a daily basis. Focusing on creating this big gesture can become a barrier to actually accomplishing anything.

Where am I going with this?

This weekend marked our second weekend back home in Halifax- and the first where we didn't want to hibernate. Our lovely friends spent weeks planning a surprise party for us- and even though the surprise leaked a few days early their kind gesture meant so much.

It wasn't an over the top event, just our friends and family, a few snacks, a last minute (delicious) cake and music. I'm sure it took some time, coordination and money to pull together but it wasn't a crazy complicated gesture.

It was a simple idea, with simple execution.

Their gesture might not have changed the world overnight, but it did change OUR world. It brightened our day, and filled our hearts with love.

We then carried those good feelings with us when we left. We probably smiled more at the strangers in the elevator, and shared those good vibes with everyone we encountered both before & after the party. Simple action, big results.

I feel so #blessed to have such lovely people in our lives and hope that we can keep working to feel others hearts with love the way ours have been filled.

What little things have made a big impact on you?

I'm sharing kindness ideas on Twitter #kindnesscounts feel free to share your thoughts on being kind there too :)

Keep Smiling :)

  1. It's definitely the little things that count....I've been keeping a blessings/kindness jar for a few months now (I write them all down on little slips of paper and shove them in the jar)....its almost full after only a few short weeks and every time I looked at it, I smile and feel blessed, all over again....(everything *will* sort itself out you know, regarding your move etc....)...Helen xx
