Sunday Smiles 02.09.14

As I mentioned last week, each Sunday I am going to start sharing a few stories that brought a smile to my face this past week, I'd love for you to share any that did the same for you!

Following a snowfall in Toronto, security cameras at the Toronto Zoo caught this beautiful panda rolling around in the snow. It's adorable. Too often we grumble about the snow, as an adult it's usually just an inconvenience. Everyday my kinders show me that snow is actually amazing, they are so excited to get out and play in it everyday, even when it's freezing cold out.

Speaking of my kiddos, they spent this week making Valentine's Day cards and decorations for the local hospital. I suggested we make something, and they came up with the ideas all on their own. We made hanging lanterns, paper chains, strung hearts to make garland and made lots of decorations for the walls. The school-agers also got involved, so I was able to take a ton of artwork to the hospital. I am so proud of all the kids.

This amazing project in London (England not Ontario) is the type of thing that makes me want to work in community service for the rest of my life. The CEO of the Forest YMCA in London was seeing clients leaving supported housing only to return weeks later due to the high cost of rent in the city. Even with a job finding an affordable apartment was challenging. Then the idea for mYPad was born. They started importing shipping containers from China and re-doing the entire inside as a small rental unit. Rent for a unit is one-third of minimum wage earnings in the city. Read all about the project here.
