Following my loose theme for July of quotes that inspire me I want to share Ghandi's Fundamentals because I find them absolutely inspiring. Ghandi used his life to accomplish so much good, and encouraged others to do so much to improve the world.
His Ten Fundamentals for Changing the World reflect who I want to be, and what I need to do to get there. I've had an image of this saved on my computer for months and I look at it on a regular basis whenever I need a reminder of what can be accomplished.
Ghandi's Ten Fundamentals for Changing the World
1. Change Yourself
2. You are in control
3. Forgive and let go
4. Take care of this moment
5. Without action, you aren't going anywhere
6. Everyone is human
7. See the good in people and help them
8. Persist
9. Be congruent, be authentic, be true to yourself
10. Continue to grow and evolve
While I appreciate all ten, I have two favourites.
See the good in people and help them, is something I am still working on. We live in a society based on passing judgement, so I am working diligently to resist the urge to judge others, particularly those who are in situations beyond their control.
Jay and I were tricked by panhandler when we first moved to Ottawa, which has left me feeling a little jaded about helping. But in other aspects of my life, if something undesirable happened I wouldn't turn my back on all things related forever. I am working hard to remind myself that the same is true in this situation. Yes, we were duped and it may happen again, but that doesn't mean I should avoid helping others in similar situations in the future.
My dad has inspired me a lot on this front. He used to work in downtown Halifax, and befriended a man down on his luck who didn't have money for food, etc. Despite the fact my dad didn't have much to give he always did his best to make sure the man had a little food in his belly. He treated him like a person who deserved help.
The second point on this list that really speaks to me is the final point, to continue to grow and evolve. For the longest time, my Facebook profile said "I'm on a constant reinvention tour" in the about me section.
That is truly how I feel about my life. I am constantly changing, working to become more articulate, generous, fashionable, considerate, etc. I want to continue growing and learning as long as I live. I think it is so rewarding to look back and see just how far I've come.
Which of these Fundamentals is your favourite?
Keep Smiling :)
